Wincup launches EPS foam cup, HIPS lid featuring EcoPure technology, which allows products to biodegrade in landfills; available in 8-, 12-, 16- and 20-oz. sizes; additional items to follow

STONE MOUNTAIN, Georgia , June 21, 2011 (press release) – New Wincup Holdings, Inc., a national leader in the manufacturing and distribution of cups, foodservice containers, lids and straws today announces the launch of VioTM -- the first expandable polystyrene (EPS) foam cup and high impact polystyrene (HIPS) lid with EcoPure® technology. VioTM cups with EcoPure® have been shown to biodegrade under conditions that simulate a biologically active landfill*, using the ASTM D5511-11 test**.

Wincup turns to science and product innovation in its drive to ‘Serving a Better Way’, expanding its product offerings to include the new VioTM foodservice line. “Being environmentally responsible has always been important to us and is most evident in the products we make and how we make them,” states George W. Wurtz, CEO of Wincup. “EPS foam has always consumed less energy and emitted fewer greenhouse gases during the manufacturing process than paper and plastic beverage cups. Now with the introduction of VioTM we have created a new end of life story for (EPS) Foam cups and HIPS lids that further demonstrates our commitment to the environment.”

VioTM cups preserve the superior performance characteristics of traditional EPS foam and meet FDA standards. VioTM foam cups have been found to biodegrade an average of 14.2 percent in the first 133 days of testing under conditions that simulate a biologically active landfill*, using the ASTM D5511-11 test**.

Launching in June, VioTM initially offers cups and lids in 8, 12, 16 and 20-ounce sizes, with additional items to follow.

* Present tests at 49% solids content approach the conditions of wetter landfills, such as in the Southeastern U.S. Biodegradation rates may be lower in landfills in other areas of the U.S. depending on moisture level in those landfills.

** ASTM D5511-11 specifies: This test method also may resemble some conditions in biologically active landfills where the gas generated is recovered and biogas production is actively promoted.
