Carlsberg CEO unconcerned over potential Russian ban on PET beer bottles as it comprises only small fraction of its profits, says move may instead direct consumers to its beers in cans or glass bottles

– Carlsberg A/S CEO, Joergen Buhl Rasmussen, expressed a lack of concern over a potential ban on polyethylene terephthalate beer bottles in Russia, saying that he does not expect the bill to become law, Food Production Daily reported May 11.
A bill was introduced earlier in 2011 that would ban sales of PET beer bottles in Russia beginning January 1, 2013, Food Production Daily reported.
Even if the ban were to become law, Rasmussen does not anticipate that it would have a significant effect on the Copenhagen, Denmark-based brewer’s bottom line as PET-bottled beer comprises only a small fraction of the company’s profits in the Russian market, Food Production Daily reported.
Such a ban could even potentially benefit the company as consumers would start drinking Carlsberg beer from cans or glass bottles, and this “would be positive in terms of 'premiumisation,'” Food Production Daily reported Rasmussen saying.
An update on the legislation is expected next week as the bill moves through the Russian legislative process, Food Production Daily reported a Carlsberg spokesman saying to BeverageDaily.com.
