PARIS , November 17, 2010 () – Internet search giant Google Inc. says it is in talks with Europe's biggest book publisher on a deal to digitally scan and distribute the company's out-of-print French books.

Google Books Director Dan Clancy says the proposed deal with Hachette Livre, the world's second-largest book publisher, is "a first of its kind." There are an estimated 1 million out-of-print books in French.

He says it will serve as a template for similar agreements with publishers elsewhere around the world.

Clancy says Google would share in revenue generated by sales of the books through its Google Books platform. The deal is not exclusive — meaning Hachette Livre is free to do similar deals with other partners.

The companies said in a joint statement Wednesday that details of the agreement will be negotiated over the next six months.
