LINZ, Austira , August 14, 2009 (press release) – The Siemens Industry Solutions Division has won a contract from Voith Paper to provide the electrical equipment for the new newsprint paper machine of Perlen Papier AG in Perlen, Switzerland. This project encompasses the drives and electrical engineering for a paper machine, two roller cutters and ancillary systems. The PM7 paper machine supplied by Voith Paper is designed to produce 360,000 metric tons of newsprint paper annually, almost exceeding three times the capacity of its predecessors. Its energy-efficient drive concept makes it one of the most modern machines of its kind. The contract is worth eight million euros. With commissioning of the paper machine now scheduled for the summer of 2010, effective paper production will be able to commence as of October 2010.

The Swiss company Perlen Papier AG, a subsidiary of CPH Chemie und Papier Holding AG, produces magazine paper and newsprint for the European market. To meet rising demands for volume and quality, a new paper machine is to be installed that produces high-quality newsprint. It will replace the present machine which dates from 1971 and was built for manufacturing standard and enhanced newsprint. The new paper line is 175 meters long, 10,450 millimeters wide, and works with a maximum drive speed of up to 2,000 meters per minute. In addition, a second line is to be added to the existing paper recycling system, and the fresh water supply system and wastewater treatment system are to be extended. This will increase paper recycling from 180,000 to 460,000 metric tons per year.

Siemens will supply the electrical engineering for the PM7 paper machine on the basis of the Sipaper solution platform developed for the pulp and paper industry. This includes multiple-motor drives for the paper machine, two roller cutters, high-voltage and low-voltage motors, distribution transformers, and low-voltage switchgear. The multiple-motor drive concept “Power Infeed TM” is used to enable the infeed of large energy volumes even with reduced investment costs, and to facilitate lower power consumption with simultaneously high availability. The energy-efficient drive system deserves special attention. Thanks to its largely gearless design and use of water-cooled high-torque motors, it offers clear benefits such as improved efficiency, lower tendency to vibration, lower noise level, and reduced space requirements.

Siemens’ scope of supply and services also includes the electrotechnical equipment of the ancillary systems for paper recycling and fresh water supply, as well as engineering and commissioning.
