The consumer confidence index in the United States rose to 102 in May, up from 97.5 in April, according to a survey released by the Conference Board on Tuesday, 28. The reading surprised analysts consulted by FactSet, who had predicted a drop to 95.7 this month. The April figure was slightly revised upwards, from 97 originally. Only the current situation index advanced over the same period, from 140.6 to 143.1, while the expectations index rose from 68.8 to 74.6.
