Memorial Lecture Tuesday at the AISTech 2024, Vedoya said U.S., Canadian and Mexican steel producers already can boast of some of the lowest CO2 intensities in the world. Ternium CEO: North American Producers Have a Big Advantage —And an Opportunity to Expand It
5/7/2024 - The sustainability of the North American steel industry is a significant advantage over the world’s other steelmaking regions, and producers should work to fortify that position with grid-focused investments, Ternium chief executive officer Máximo Vedoya said Tuesday.
Now, he said, it is time to go further.
In the near and medium terms, North America should focus on developing renewable power sources that are reliable and affordable and invest in new transmission and distribution infrastructure.
“We have done the hard part of decarbonizing the steel industry in our region. Now we need to move forward with the energy grid,” he said.
To that end, he said, North America needs to have a policy and legal framework to incentivize industrial decarbonization efforts. Policies also should prioritize regionally made North American steel over imports from countries with much higher carbon footprints.
“Producing steel in North America is much cleaner for our planet than producing steel in other regions of the world, like China,” he said. “We are in the best position to lead the energy transition.”
