The US$6.37 million grant will allow the team to “develop life cycle inventory and Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) tools that will automatically generate steel product EPDs — making the reporting process more efficient and seamless,” according to a press release.American Iron and Steel Institute-Backed Project Awarded US$6.37 Million EPA Grant
7/17/2024 - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that a team consisting of The University of Massachusetts Amherst, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) were selected to receive a grant to improve emissions documentation for steel production.
“Federal roads, bridges, highways and other infrastructure projects use a lot of American steel, which is the cleanest steel in the world. I am proud that AISI is a part of this dynamic team that is developing tools that continue to highlight American steel’s sustainability and set a new standard for transparency in steel manufacturing,” said AISI President and CEO Kevin Dempsey in a statement. “This initiative will create a much-needed database that will immensely improve reporting for numerous stakeholders and help reduce environmental impacts.”
Today’s announcement from the EPA includes a total of 38 grant recipients across the U.S., totaling nearly US$160 million, and aims to support the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in U.S. construction materials and products. Steel manufacturing and construction materials used in infrastructure accounts for more than 15% of annual global greenhouse gas emissions, per the EPA.
“As America continues to build more and upgrade our nation’s infrastructure under President Biden’s leadership, cleaner construction materials like concrete and steel are increasingly essential for the nation’s prosperity,” said EPA Deputy Administrator Janet McCabe. “These historic investments will expand market access for a new generation of more climate-friendly construction materials, and further grow American jobs that are paving the way to the clean energy economy.”
Final selections are contingent upon the grantees completing legal and administrative requirements. They are expected to receive funding in late summer.
