AF&PA CEO issues statement in response to renewed discussions about New Jersey's paper bag ban; New Jersey is only state that has banned paper bags, but 100% recyclable, reusable, compostable paper bags can be 'sustainable choice, environmental solution'

WASHINGTON , October 5, 2022 (press release) –

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) President and CEO Heidi Brock released the following statement in response to renewed discussions on the harm caused by New Jersey’s paper bag ban:

“Paper bags are a sustainable choice and part of an environmental solution for the Garden State.

“Recyclable paper bags can serve as an alternative to the increasing volume of reusable, but non-recyclable, bags being distributed without any plan for end-of-life impacts.

“New Jersey is the only state in the nation that has banned paper bags. Lawmakers in Trenton can fix this broken law right now. An amendment is needed to ensure access to paper bags, which are 100% recyclable, as well as reusable and compostable.”

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) serves to advance U.S. paper and wood products manufacturers through fact-based public policy and marketplace advocacy. The forest products industry is circular by nature. AF&PA member companies make essential products from renewable and recycle resources, generate renewable bioenergy and are committed to continuous improvement through the industry’s sustainability initiative—Better Practices, Better Planet 2030: Sustainable Products for a Sustainable Future. The forest products industry accounts for approximately four percent of the total U.S. manufacturing GDP, manufactures nearly $300 billion in products annually and employs approximately 950,000 people. The industry meets a payroll of approximately $60 billion annually and is among the top 10 manufacturing sector employers in 45 states.
