Western U.S. sawmills in January produced 1.133 billion board ft. (bbf) of softwood lumber, down 6.8% from January 2021 when output was 1.215 bbf, but up 1.3% compared with December 2021’s 1.118 bbf, according to the latest figures from the Western Wood Products Assn. (WWPA) of Portland, Oregon. Coastal mills contributed 722 million board ft. (mmbf) to the January total, down 3.1% from January 2021’s 744 mmbf but up 5.5% from December’s 684 mmbf, while Inland mills accounted for 360 mmbf in January, down 12.3% from January 2021’s 411 mmbf and down 3.6% from December’s 374 mmbf. California coast production in January was down 15.1% year-over-year and down 15.3% month-over-month to 51 mmbf. Western U.S softwood lumber inventories in January, at 1.206 bbf, were up 4.1% compared with 1.159 bbf in January 2021. Western lumber mills in January produced at 76% of practical capacity, down from 86% in January 2021 and unchanged from December.
