Western U.S. sawmills in February produced 1.004 billion board ft. (bbf) of softwood lumber, down 12.6% from February 2022, when output was 1.149 bbf, and down 9.1% compared with January’s 1.105 bbf, according to the latest figures from the Western Wood Products Assn. (WWPA) of Portland, Oregon. Coastal mills contributed 622 mmbf to the February total, down 15.4% from February 2022’s 735 million board ft. (mmbf), and decreased 9.7% from January’s 689 mmbf, while Inland mills accounted for 336 mmbf in February, down 9.3% from February 2022’s 371 mmbf and 9.4% lower than January’s 371 mmbf. California coast production in February increased 6.9% year-over-year and rose 1.1% month-over-month to 46 mmbf. Western U.S softwood lumber inventories in February, at 1.286 bbf, were up 8.3% year-over-year. Western lumber mills in February produced at 72% of practical capacity, declining from 82% in February 2022 and down from 75% in January.
