Western U.S. sawmills in December produced 960 million board ft. (mmbf) of softwood lumber, down 15.0% from December 2021, when output was 1.130 billion board ft. (bbf), and down 10.8% compared with November’s 1.077 bbf, according to the latest figures from the Western Wood Products Assn. (WWPA) of Portland, Oregon. Coastal mills contributed 598 mmbf to the December total, down 14.2% from December 2021’s 697 mmbf and decreased 10.0% from November’s 665 mmbf, while Inland mills accounted for 318 mmbf in December, down 15.6% from December 2021’s 376 mmbf and 13.2% lower than November’s 366 mmbf. California coast production in December fell 20.8% year-over-year and declined 4.1% month-over-month to 44 mmbf. For the full year of 2022, Western U.S. sawmills produced 13.820 bbf of lumber, down 6.0% year-over year. Coastal mill output was 8.661 bbf, down 5.7%; Inland output was 4.558 bbf, down 5.7% and California coast production was 601 mmbf, down 11.1% year-over-year. Western U.S softwood lumber inventories in December, at 1.261 bbf, were up 8.6% year-over-year. Western lumber mills in December produced at 69% of practical capacity, declining from 77% in December 2021 and November. For the full year of 2022, Western sawmills produced at 78% of practical capacity, down from 83% a year earlier.
