Western U.S. sawmills in August produced 1.257 billion board ft. (bbf) of softwood lumber, up 7.8% from August 2021, when output was 1.166 bbf, and up 14.2% compared with July’s 1.101 bbf, according to the latest figures from the Western Wood Products Assn. (WWPA) of Portland, Oregon. Coastal mills contributed 791 million board ft. (mmbf) to the August total, up 8.4% from August 2021’s 730 mmbf and up 13.6% from July’s 696 mmbf, while Inland mills accounted for 408 mmbf in August, up 5.3% from August 2021’s 387 mmbf and up 16.4% from July’s 350 mmbf. California coast production in August was up 18.9% year-over-year and up 7.5% month-over-month to 59 mmbf. For the first eight months of 2022, Western U.S. sawmills produced 9.683 bbf of lumber, down 3.4% year-over year. Coastal mill output was 6.155 bbf, down 1.5%; Inland output was 3.114 bbf, down 5.9% and California coast production was 414 mmbf, down 11.7% year-over-year. Western U.S softwood lumber inventories in August, at 1.259 bbf, were down 0.8% compared with 1.269 bbf in August 2021. Western lumber mills in August produced at 78% of practical capacity, up from 76% in August 2021 and down from 79% in July. For the first eight months of 2022, Western sawmills produced at 81% of practical capacity, down from 84% a year earlier.
