Conservation groups will rally in front of the U.S. Forest Service Region 3 headquarters in Albuquerque Wednesday to urge the Biden administration to stop logging mature and old-growth forests on public lands and enact a lasting rule to protect them. The groups also will deliver petitions and letters from thousands of people who want these climate-saving carbon sinks protected. What: Rally to stop Forest Service logging targeting mature and old-growth trees on public lands, including in Santa Fe and Sacramento national forests in New Mexico, and Kaibab National Forest in Arizona. Representatives of local groups will deliver petitions to Forest Service officials. When: Noon, Wednesday, November 16, 2022 Where: U.S. Forest Service Region 3 Headquarters, 333 Broadway SE, Albuquerque, NM Who: WildEarth Guardians, Frack Off Chaco Coalition, Center for Biological Diversity, Sierra Club, New Mexico Wilderness Alliance, Friends of the Earth, and others. New Mexicans and Arizonans are living with intensifying harm from climate change, including extreme weather, persistent drought and drying rivers. Saving these forests and stopping the sacrifice of public lands for fossil fuel drilling and leasing are crucial steps to address the climate crisis. Activists are rallying at U.S. Forest Service offices across the country this week to raise awareness about threats to federal forests and show support for a national rule to protect them from logging. The rallies follow release of a report showing the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management are undermining President Biden’s commitment to conserve these trees by logging hundreds of thousands of acres. In addition to helping address the climate crisis by storing vast amounts of carbon, mature and old-growth forests provide clean water and crucial habitat for imperiled plants and animals. The Center for Biological Diversity is a national, nonprofit conservation organization with more than 1.7 million members and online activists dedicated to the protection of endangered species and wild places. WildEarth Guardians is a conservation nonprofit whose mission is to protect and restore the wildlife, wild places, wild rivers, and health of the American West. Guardians has offices in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington, and over 278,000 members and supporters worldwide.
