As food safety evolves, technology and innovation are more crucial now than ever to fortify food safety systems, says Reid Jackson, Vice President, Innovation & Partnerships at GS1 US, and Darin Detwiler, Founder and CEO of Detwiler Consulting Group

LOS ANGELES , August 19, 2024 () –

As food safety evolves, technology and innovation are more crucial now than ever.

That was the main focus of discussion between Reid Jackson, Vice President, Innovation & Partnerships at GS1 US, and Darin Detwiler, Founder and CEO of Detwiler Consulting Group, during a recent episode of the "Next Level Supply Chain with GS1 US" podcast.

During the podcast, the duo discussed the roles that new technologies and procedures play in fortifying food safety systems, the emotional and operational challenges faced by professionals in the field, and the essential human elements—like courage—that drive meaningful change.

In addition, Jackson and Detweiler addressed the complexities of balancing short-term and long-term goals in food safety investments, emphasizing the importance of preparing and integrating cutting-edge solutions amid ongoing production challenges.

"The people working in food safety, quality assurance, they're still going down the freeway at 65 miles an hour. You can't just stop because people are making other decisions like we're not going to stop production, right? So anytime we're talking about adoption and adaptation with technology, you're talking about a scenario where you're doing this while continually moving down the freeway at break speed," Detweiler said during the podcast.

"So these challenges have to be understood, and sometimes it doesn't come across as the simple story of the round peg in the round hole or the one size fits all, or the silver bullet. You have to talk about the complexity pre, during, and post-adoption of technology," Detweiler added.

Other topics tackled during the episode include:

---How integrating advanced digital solutions like data analytics and blockchain can simultaneously address long-term and short-term goals within the food safety sector, ensuring a sustainable and secure supply chain.

---The importance of cultivating courage within food safety leadership roles, emphasizing the critical need for a proactive approach in preventing and mitigating safety crises.

---The transformative role of social media in empowering consumers as active stakeholders in food safety, contributing real-time data, and enhancing industry transparency and responsiveness to potential risks.
