MIDLAND, Mich. – June 9, 2023 – Dow (NYSE: DOW) has developed a silicone feel modifier technology free from benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and xylenes (BTEX) for use in the automotive and upholstery industries. This material is designed to address the growing demand for a more sustainable footprint in natural and synthetic leather finishing. Consumers today are looking for natural and synthetic leather in automotive interiors and upholstery that not only offers a luxurious look and feel but also complies with regulatory specifications. Dow’s new generation silicone technology addresses both demands, maintaining enhanced haptics, matting, abrasion resistance and durability. “A key aspect of automotive interiors and upholstery is the sensory perception they impart on users. Leather significantly contributes to creating luxury customer experiences,” said Isabelle Riff, global marketing leader, leather at Dow. “We’re excited to bring our future-ready and patented silicone technology to market, as the leather industry progresses towards greater sustainability. For over three decades, we have been focused on developing leather additives that not only address but exceed market and customer expectations. This technology is our most advanced response to the current demands for high performing leather coatings and is compliant with the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Level 1 standard.” On Monday, June 26, at 9 a.m. EST, Isabelle Riff, as well as Bertrand Lenoble, principal scientist, and Myron Hooks, scientist, Dow Leather, will present a webinar titled: “Enhancing Leather Haptics through Responsible Chemistry.” During the virtual presentation, they will explain the performance attributes of Dow’s novel silicone feel modifier technology. Those interested in learning how this technology can be used for automotive and upholstery applications are invited to register online.
