China will lead the purified terephthalic acid (PTA) capacity additions in Asia, accounting for about 69% of the region’s capacity additions in 2026, estimates GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

GlobalData’s latest report, “Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) Industry Installed Capacity and Capital Expenditure (CapEx) Forecast by Region and Countries including details of All Active Plants, Planned and Announced Projects, 2022-2026,” reveals that China will register the highest capacity additions in Asia in 2026, by gaining a capacity of 19.40 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) from nine planned and announced projects.

Sudarshini Ennelli, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, comments : “In China, a significant capacity addition will be from a planned project, Sinopec Oilfield Service Corporation Yizheng Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) Plant 3, with a capacity of 3.00 mtpa. It is expected to commence production in 2023.”

The second highest PTA capacity additions in China are expected to come from Dongying Weilian Chemical Dongying Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) Plant, Hengli Petrochemical Huizhou Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) Plant 1, and Hengli Petrochemical Huizhou Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) Plant 2, with 2.5 mtpa each.

Jiangsu Jiatong Energy Nantong City Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) Plant 1, and Jiangsu Jiatong Energy Nantong City Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) Plant 2 will also add 2.5 mtpa capacity each by 2026.

All the above-mentioned plants are expected to commence operations by 2022.

Ennelli concludes: “With the capacity of 1.8 mtpa, Zhejiang Petrochemical Daishan Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) Plant 2 is the third highest contributor in terms of capacity additions in the country. The plant is expected to start production by 2026.”
