Western U.S. sawmills in May produced 1.200 billion board ft. (bbf) of softwood lumber, down 2.6% from May 2021, when output was 1.232 bbf, and up 0.7% compared with April’s 1.192 bbf, according to the latest figures from the Western Wood Products Assn. (WWPA) of Portland, Oregon. Coastal mills contributed 766 million board ft. (mmbf) to the May total, down 2.6% from May 2021’s 786 mmbf and up 1.8% from April’s 752 mmbf, while Inland mills accounted for 381 mmbf in May, down 3.1% from May 2021’s 394 mmbf and down 1.5% from April’s 387 mmbf. California coast production in May was up 1.2% year-over-year and up 1.4% month-over-month to 53 mmbf. For the first five months of 2022, Western U.S. sawmills produced 6.062 bbf of lumber, down 5.3% year-over year. Coastal mill output was 3.868 bbf, down 2.7%; Inland output was 1.949 bbf, down 8.2% and California coast production was 246 mmbf, down 19.1% year-over-year. Western U.S softwood lumber inventories in May, at 1.298 bbf, were up 10.0% compared with 1.180 bbf in May 2021. Western lumber mills in May produced at 82% of practical capacity, down from 88% in May 2021 and up from 81% in April. For the first five months of 2022, Western sawmills produced at 82% of practical capacity, down from 87% a year earlier.
