Western U.S. sawmills in February produced 1.141 billion board ft. (bbf) of softwood lumber, down 5.3% from February 2021, when output was 1.205 bbf, but up 0.2% compared with January’s 1.138 bbf, according to the latest figures from the Western Wood Products Assn. (WWPA) of Portland, Oregon. Coastal mills contributed 728 million board ft. (mmbf) to the February total, down 0.7% from February 2021’s 733 mmbf but up 0.3% from January’s 725 mmbf, while Inland mills accounted for 366 mmbf in February, down 9.4% from February 2021’s 405 mmbf but up 1.5% from January’s 361 mmbf. California coast production in February was down 30.7% year-over-year and down 9.8% month-over-month to 46 mmbf. For the first two months of 2022, Western U.S. sawmills produced 2.278 bbf of lumber, down 5.8% year-over year. Coastal mill output was 1.453 bbf, down 1.6%; Inland output was 728 mmbf, down 10.8% and California coast production was 97 mmbf, down 23.1% year-over-year. Western U.S softwood lumber inventories in February, at 1.221 bbf, were up 0.6% compared with 1.213 bbf in February 2021. Western lumber mills in February produced at 81% of practical capacity, down from 85% in February 2021 and up from 77% in January. For the first two months of 2022, Western sawmills produced at 79% of practical capacity, down from 85% a year earlier.
