Western U.S. sawmills in December produced 1.118 billion board ft. (bbf) of softwood lumber, down 8.6% from December 2020, when output was 1.224 bbf, and down 2.7% compared with November 2021’s 1.149 bbf, according to the latest figures from the Western Wood Products Assn. (WWPA) of Portland, Oregon. Coastal mills contributed 684 million board ft. (mmbf) to the December total, down 10.2% from December 2020’s 762 mmbf and down 4.2% from November’s 714 mmbf, while Inland mills accounted for 374 mmbf in December, down 7.5% from December 2020’s 404 mmbf and down 1.9% from November 2021’s 381 mmbf. California coast production in December was up 4.1% year-over-year and up 12.7% month-over-month to 60 mmbf. For the twelve months of 2021, Western U.S. sawmills produced 14.548 bbf of lumber, up 0.7% year-over year. Coastal mill output was 9.016 bbf, up 1.4%; Inland output was 4.806 bbf, down 1.4% and California coast production was 726 mmbf, up 6.0% year-over-year. Western U.S softwood lumber inventories in December, at 1.196 bbf, were up 7.3% compared with 1.115 bbf in December 2020. Western lumber mills in December produced at 75% of practical capacity, down from 78% in December 2020 and down from 81% in November 2021. For the twelve months of 2021, Western sawmills produced at 81% of practical capacity, up from 80% a year earlier.
