China pulp imports gain 19.1% year-over-year in January and rise 3.3% month-over-month, to 1.618 million tonnes, one of highest totals on record

LOS ANGELES , February 25, 2014 () – China imported 1,617,832 tonnes of pulp in January 2014, rising 19.1% from January 2013 and 3.3% from December 2013, according to China Customs Bureau statistics. 

This was one of the highest monthly totals on record, just short of March 2012’s 1,623,333 tonnes. The imports to China have surpassed 1 million tonnes in every month since August 2011; in 2011 they were above 1 million tonnes in every month except June and July.

In January 2014, bleached softwood kraft pulp (BSKP) imports totalled 611,924 tonnes, growing 12.7% from a year ago and 4.2% from a month ago. Bleached hardwood kraft pulp (BHKP) imports of 599,457 tonnes gained 25.1% year-over-year but dropped 8.4% month-over-month.

In January 2014, China imported 260,660 tonnes of Brazilian bleached eucalyptus kraft pulp (BEKP), which jumped 72% year-over-year but declined 19.7% month-over-month.

China imported 204,510 tonnes of BHKP from Indonesia in January 2014, for increases of 18.6% over January 2013 and 19.9% over December 2013.

China received 250,218 tonnes of Canadian BSKP, or northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK), in January 2014, for increases of 23.2% year-over-year and of 7.7% month-over-month.

Chilean bleached radiata kraft pulp (BRKP) imports to China in January 2014 of 58,378 tonnes decreased both year-over-year and month-over-month, respectively by 30.7% and 27.8%.

The NBSK imports from Finland in January 2014 of 64,865 tonnes increased 16.0% from a year ago and 29.8% from a month ago.

In January 2014 China imported 56,166 tonnes of unbleached softwood kraft pulp (UKP), increasing 6.5% year-over-year while decreasing month-over-month by 1.2%.

The imports of mechanical and semi-chemical pulp, also known as high-yield pulp or bleached chemi-thermomechanical pulp (BCTMP), totalled 146,146 tonnes in January 2014, increasing 8.7% year-over-year and 34.9% month-over-month.

The January 2014 imports of dissolving pulp reached 202,093 tonnes, growing 37.5% from a year ago and 28.7% from a month ago.
