Mandan, North Dakota, City Commission gives initial approval to ordinance banning sale of e-cigarettes to anyone under age 18; final vote on proposal set for March 4

MANDAN, North Dakota , February 19, 2014 (Associated Press) – Mandan's City Commission has given initial approval to an ordinance banning the sale of electronic cigarettes to minors.

The Bismarck Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1fdOafi) a final vote is set March 4 on the proposal, which would ban the sale or giving of e-cigarettes to minors and prohibit those under 18 from possessing or using them. Violators would face a fine up to $500.

E-cigarette inhalers are an odorless, vapor-emitting substitute for tobacco cigarettes. The federal government does not yet regulate e-cigarettes, though several states including North Dakota have expanded indoor smoking bans to include them.

Bismarck and Fargo already have banned the sale of e-cigarettes to minors, and Williston commissioners have given initial approval to a similar ordinance.
