Leading paper based packaging manufacturer, Smurfit Kappa, has produced a highly protective, one-piece cardboard packaging solution for online retailer The Tea Experience to package their glass teapots and fragile gift packs.
Doncaster based, The Tea Experience (www.teaexperience.co.uk) supplies everything from teas and flowering tea blooms to authentic Chinese teapots and bowls, and required an economical and supply chain friendly solution to package their highly breakable products.
Smurfit Kappa produced four designs to cater for all of the company’s packaging needs, which can be used individually or in combination to create gift packs. Smurfit Kappa kept costs to a minimum for The Tea Experience by negating the need for bespoke packaging for individual items and minimising the amount of packaging they needed to stock.
Each design is a sustainable, all-in-one solution featuring die-cut internal flaps, negating the need for bubble wrap and ancillary packing items. A pair of internal fittings suspend the glass teapots and tea blooms away from the outer walls, creating crumple zones for protection when sending through the postal system and were made using lightweight yet strong E-Flute. The larger outer cases and fittings were made from thicker, more rigid B-Flute, which is balanced perfectly for both transit and presentation packaging. Using a brown Kraft-liner paired with a high gloss label, the desired simple, classic look was achieved.
The boards are FSC and PEFC certified in line with Smurfit Kappa’s sector-leading environmental credentials that demand all its boards are environmentally, ethically and socially sustainable as well as being fully recyclable.
Ann Davis, business owner of The Tea Experience says: “With the help of Smurfit Kappa and the design house Design Futures we were able to have smart, practical packaging that accommodates our glass tea wares and flowering tea blooms perfectly. The boxes provide secure, sturdy packing solutions that cope with the rigours of transportation without the need for additional bubble wrapping. We tested the boxes by throwing them out of upstairs windows onto concrete floors with no damage to the contents. The boxes are simple, attractive, easy to construct as well as being environmentally sound too.”
Paul Barker, Smurfit Kappa Business Development Manager comments: “We are always pleased to be able to create economical packaging solutions that deliver tangible benefits to our customers as well as consumers. Since delivery in November The Tea Experience have experienced zero breakages. In addition to fulfilling their packaging and transportation needs, we’ve also created an environmentally-friendly pack in line with Smurfit Kappa’s consistent focus on sustainability.”
As well as PEFC and FSC certification, Smurfit Kappa UK is the only integrated packaging manufacturer to achieve Carbon Trust Standard across the whole of the packaging cycle by certifying the carbon footprint of its Paper, Packaging and Recycling divisions.
