Overall container cargo volume at Port of Long Beach, California, up 2.3% year-over-year in May, port says; imports up 4%, exports down 6.1%; port handled 536,681 TEUs compared in May, versus 524,715 TEUs last year

LONG BEACH, California , June 13, 2011 (press release) – Imports are up 4 percent from the same period last year

Overall container cargo volume rose by 2.3 percent in May compared to a year ago at the Port of Long Beach. Imports were up 4 percent while exports declined by 6.1 percent compared to May 2010.

Overall, the Port moved 536,681 twenty-foot equivalent container units last month compared to 524,715 TEUs in May of last year.

Port terminals handled 375,100 TEUs of import containers and 130,161 TEUs of export containers. Empty container moves were up 8.1 percent to 131,420 TEUs. Most empty containers are bound overseas for refilling.
