China's January wastepaper imports up 42% year-over-year to 2.5 million tonnes, while pulp imports rose 16.3% to 1.4 million tonnes; average import price down 2.4% for wastepaper, up 1.5% for pulp, reports China customs

In Jan 2013, due to Chinese New Year holidays, import of paper raw material skyrocketed compared with same period of 2012. Average import price was flat from same period of 2012. Based on statistics from China Customs Agency, Jan 2013, China imported 2.518 million mts of waste paper, jumping 42% year on year. Import value was USD 510 million, jumping 38.5% year on year. Average import price was US$ 204.5/tonne, dipping 2.4% year on year. China imported 1.364 million mts of pulp, jumping 16.3% year on year. Import value was US$ 910 million, up 18%. Average import price was US$ 666.3/tonne, up 1.5% year on year.
In Jan, the US was still the largest exporter of waste paper for China and the import volume from the US accounted for 44.1% of total waste paper import in China to 1.11 million mts, surging 37.1% year on year. China imported 778,000 mts of waste paper from 27 countries in EU, surging 37%, accounting for 30.9% of total waste paper import. Among which, 167,000 mts of waste paper were imported from UK, jumping 36% year on year. 155,000 mts of waste paper were imported from Holland, jumping 33%. In addition, China imported 238,000 mts of waste paper from Japan, jumping 47.6% year on year and accounting for 9.5% of import totals.
In Jan, China imported 361,000 mts of pulp from Canada, jumping 29.9% year on year. China imported 193,000 mts of pulp from the US, surging 47.1% year on year. 182,000 mts of pulp were imported from Indonesia, surging 22% year on year.
In Jan, foreign funded firms in China imported 1.977 million mts of waste paper, surging 52.5% year on year and accounting for 78.5% of waste paper import totals. They imported 648,000 mts of pulp, up 28.9% and accounting for 47.5% of import totals. private firms in China imported 342,000 mts of waste paper and 413,000 mts of pulp, up 10.5% and 23.4% year on year respectively.
