Two trade unions in Australia seeking investigation into work practices at Visy's kraft paper mill in Tumut, New South Wales, following alleged series of near-fatal incidents in recent weeks, but company and Safe Work NSW have not responded

LOS ANGELES, December 9, 2015 (Industry Intelligence Inc.) –

Two trades unions in Australia are seeking an investigation into work practices at Visy Industries Holdings Pty. Ltd.’s pulp and paper mill in Tumut, New South Wales, reported ABC News on Dec. 8.

Recently, the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) joined the Electrical Trades Union in urging action, alleging that a series of potentially fatal incidents have occurred at the mill in recent weeks.

Visy and Safe Work NSW have not yet responded to the allegations, ABC News reported, noting that it contacted both Safe Work NSW and Visy for comment.

Allegedly, recent incidents of concern at the mill include a roof collapse and an apprentice receiving a high-voltage shock. CFMEU Secretary Alex Millar said the union fears a fatality is inevitable if nothing is done.

Visy’s Tumut mill cost nearly AU$1 billion (US$719.8 million) to build and was completed in the 2000s. It produces kraft paper for domestic and international markets, according to the company’s website.
